Golf Tournament to Raise Funds for Larchwood Library
Each Tuesday, a group of youngsters converges on the Larchwood Library for story time. This weekly event draws such a large number of young people that library officials must use the Larchwood Community building to house everyone comfortably. While grateful for the hospitality at the community building, library staff would like to have their own area for story time and other library events so that they will no longer need to transport materials and staff, as well as children and caretakers. In addition to space for story time and events, the State of Iowa requires accredited libraries to have a place to process materials away from the public. To meet this requirement, officials at the Larchwood Library would like to see the addition of a private office. Storage is another concern for the library, which staff lists as one of their three main needs at this time. To provide the additional space the Larchwood Library needs, a building committee was assembled. This committee is tackling the tough space issues facing the library by starting with fundraising activities. With registration at 12:30 p.m. and a shot gun start at 1:00 p.m. on June 30 th at Meadow Acres Golf Course in Larchwood, the library will be holding a golf tournament to kick-off the fundraising portion of their project. So far, every business that committee members approached has made some form of donation to the project. From a Skyforce game jersey and sky box tickets to golf balls to gift certificates, there will be at least thirty different types of prizes available. Shane Reinke has been promoting the event over the radio, letting the public know about the celebrities and prizes that will help make the day even more fun. Mingling with tournament golfers will be sport celebrities and former West Lyon graduates LeVar Woods, Kyle Vanden Bosch, Darrin Naatjes, and Nate Fluit. Other celebrities that will be attending the tournament include Erik Thorstenson from KSFY Sposts, Stu Whitney and Mick Garry from the Argus Leader, Cory Johnsen-Lehr, Roy Williams and Brian McIntire from the Sioux Falls Storm, Ben Davis from Mix 97.3, and Don Jorgenson from KELO TV.Later this summer, the building committee will sell tacos in a bag and beverages at the burnout in Larchwood on July 7 th. In August, the Randy Simons family will be holding a murder mystery program at an event called Sundaes on Saturday, where participants will also delight in ice cream and toppings. This family event will ask for freewill donations for the library’s building fund. In addition to the immediate needs of the library, library staff would like to see a new entrance on the north side, as well as additional parking behind the building. They are delighted to see so much local interest in their project, and are excited to see what the fundraisers of the summer bring.
